What Is a Self-Guided Learning™ Course?

Self-Guided Learning is a course-based learning option from the American Heart Association®. It works in two parts:

  1. Online cognitive learning — Complete a self-paced, adaptive course on any compatible device: desktop, laptop, or tablet. The online learning activity uses True Adaptive™ learning powered by Area9 Lyceum, which adjusts content based on your knowledge and confidence level. You spend more time on topics you haven’t mastered and move quickly through content you already know.
  2. Self-guided skills session — Perform hands-on skills at a CPR Verification Station™ learning center. The station measures your performance objectively against American Heart Association guidelines and provides real-time, audiovisual performance feedback. You can repeat the required skills activities as many times as needed to achieve a passing score.

Complete both components, and you receive your American Heart Association Course Completion eCard for BLS, ACLS, or PALS.

This approach is different from blended learning or instructor-led classroom learning. There is no instructor facilitating the skills session. You complete everything independently, on your own timeline.

BLS, ACLS, and PALS Courses at the Antioch Location

Safety Training Seminars offers three primary Self-Guided Learning course options for healthcare professionals at the Antioch site:

BLS — Basic Life Support

  • Price: $120
  • Online course: 1–2 hours
  • Skills session: 30 minutes
  • For: Nurses, physicians, EMTs, paramedics, dental professionals, medical assistants, hospital staff

BLS courses teach high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants, effective AED use, rescue breathing, airway management, and team-based resuscitation. The American Heart Association® BLS Provider course completion eCard is valid for two years and accepted by hospitals, clinics, and healthcare employers nationwide — including facilities near Antioch like John Muir Health and regional East Bay medical centers.

ACLS — Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support

  • Price: $290
  • Online course: 2–3 hours
  • Skills session: 30 minutes
  • For: Physicians, advanced practice nurses, paramedics, and other providers managing cardiac arrest, stroke, and advanced airway emergencies

ACLS training prepares providers to manage complex cardiovascular emergencies using algorithm-based clinical decision-making and team communication protocols.

PALS — Pediatric Advanced Life Support

  • Price: $290
  • Online course: 2–3 hours
  • Skills session: 30 minutes
  • For: Pediatricians, pediatric nurses, emergency providers, and anyone managing critically ill infants and children

PALS courses cover respiratory failure, shock recognition, and pediatric resuscitation skills aligned with the latest American Heart Association 2025 Guidelines.

All three courses follow the HeartCode® Complete course format — the American Heart Association’s Self-Guided Learning course for BLS, ACLS, and PALS. Upon successful completion, learners receive an American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, or PALS Provider Course Completion eCard the same day their skills session is completed.

HeartCode® is a trademark of the American Heart Association.

What Is a CPR Verification Station™ Learning Center?

The CPR Verification Station™ learning center uses Voice-Assisted Manikin (VAM) technology to guide learners through required psychomotor skills. The station provides objective, real-time feedback on:

  • Compression depth and rate
  • Chest recoil
  • Ventilation technique
  • Two-rescuer CPR coordination

No live instructor coaches or evaluates you during the session. The station objectively measures your performance against AHA-defined criteria. If you don’t pass on the first attempt, you practice and repeat until you meet the standard. The process takes roughly 30 minutes for BLS and ACLS/PALS skills sessions.

This format works particularly well for healthcare professionals in Antioch and the broader East Contra Costa County area who need to renew or complete initial training without rearranging their work schedule.
